Retirement Sale at The Playful Garden!

Dear Playful Garden Customers,

ret-sale-1I’m so excited to let you know that I’m retiring!

Eight years ago I had a dream that came to fruition, which was to open a garden art shop in Downtown, Napa. I opened the store just as our economy began to tank. I was probably (well, certainly) somewhat naïve. I knew it would be a lot of work, but I believed I would be successful and I was up for the challenge. Making a profit was not my main priority—making people smile and bringing a little joy into their lives was. I’m forever grateful to my husband, Mike for supporting me in every aspect of operating a successful retail business. Without his support, The Playful Garden would never have never survived the myriad of challenges we faced with the economy and renewal of our Downtown.

Over the years, I’ve learned a lot—from how to run a credit card to how to stage a window display. But more importantly, I learned a whole lot of life lessons: respect for money, respect for people’s personal space, when to listen to my intuition and act upon it, forgiveness (including forgiveness to self), how to go with the flow and trust …the list goes on and on. I have to say that it’s been a great adventure and a lot of fun, and I feel that it was worth every moment that I invested. Working at The Playful Garden most often felt like play as opposed to work… that’s what happens when you love what you do.

As an adjunct to the lessons, I also made sacrifices in relation to taking good care of myself and in relation to my family by not being as available as I could otherwise have been. I’m nearly 70 and at this stage in my life, I am no longer willing to make those kinds of sacrifices. I want to spend more time with my loved ones, be as healthy as I can possibly be, and experience even more things in life that bring me joy.

I am taking with me the very best that The Playful Garden has had to offer. I’m proud of what was created and extremely grateful to those who helped along the way. Even though The Playful Garden won’t exist anymore as a brick and mortar, the joy that I believe it brought to others will last way beyond what is tangible. The “Garden” will live on in thousands of gardens and homes, both local and beyond.thank-you2

Best of all, I will carry in my heart all of the friendships I’ve made—and at the top of the list are my amazing employees! Yasuko, Shon and Nancy (and Lorna part-time)–your loyalty, dedication and outstanding work ethics were/are beyond what I could have ever imagined. I attribute much of The Playful Garden’s success to your friendliness and stellar customer service! To all of my friends: In the midst of my business day you brightened my life with your smiling faces, shared your hearts with me, boosted me up when needed, and enlightened me with your loving wisdom. Who could ask for more? I feel blessed many times over that you are all a part of my life.

Last of all, I want to let you know that in my retirement I’m planning to donate some of my time in the healing world of gardening with those who are grieving or lonely. More to come on that later!

So that’s it. This Saturday, December 3, the big “Retirement Sale” will begin and on December 31, 2016, The Playful Garden will close its doors. Please stop by to say farewell and grab some deals on our products as well!

With much love and appreciation, I say farewell and thank you for the gifts you brought MY way…

Happy Holidays!
